Interview: I interviewed both of my parents. Me: Why did we go to America in the first place?
Dad: I went to the University of Michigan as a visiting professor on my sabbatical.
Mom: I also went to the University of Michigan as a visiting scholar.
Me: How was moving to America?
Dad: Since the University of Michigan was the college I went to as a grad student, I was pretty nostalgic about returning there. Mom: After you were born, I was extremely busy with my work and a babysitter had to take care of you. I was glad that we had a chance for the whole family to be together and travel for a long period of time.
Me: How do you think traveling to America changed our life?
Dad: Well, both of your sisters got to go to school in America and study there. After a year, since I had to go back to Korea to teach, the family was separated. Also, in America, you learned English and forgot Korean, so you had to go to an English speaking school.
Brief description of source: The first picture is a picture of me and my sister and our new friends recently after our family moved to America. The second and third pictures are two pictures of the yearbook I got from my school in America. I interviewed my parents about our move to the US.
Source type (primary or secondary): Since the first picture is directly related to the fact that I moved because the picture is of me and my friends, it is a primary source. The second and third pictures are a secondary source because it is not directly related to my moving, but I got this yearbook and experiences because I had moved. The interview is a primary source because my parents experienced it directly and the information is directly from them.
Short explanation of the source’s significance to the event:
The first picture shows my life when I first moved to America. Since the event I am focusing on is when I moved, it is significant because it shows how I got along in my life in America. Since I left behind my life and friends in Korea, the picture serves as a source of showing my new life. It is one of the earliest pictures I could find of my neighborhood and it holds many memories of the event.
The second and thirds pictures show the yearbook I got from my school and the memories it holds. It is significant because it shows all the events I had experienced and all the friends I got to know because I moved to America. It is the earliest yearbook I could find for my American school. I am showing the page for the Halloween party we had, so it is an example of an experience I had after I moved.
The interview is significant because it gives my parents' opinions and thoughts on the event. Since they were the cause of the moving and the ones who directly experienced it, it is important to the event.
Written recount of the event with direct reference to all of the source
In 2003, my family was going to move to America because my parents were going to visit the University of Michigan as visiting scholars. I was 4 or 5 at the time and didn't exactly know that my life was probably being severely altered. I was just excited that we were going somewhere else. We moved to a city called Ann Arbor in Michigan. I made a lot of new friends there in my neighborhood and had a lot of fun at school events. My life really did change after that because the reason why I am going to KIS is because I learned English but lost fluency in Korean. My personality was also shaped in America. I still keep in touch with my American friends. Moving to America was a very important time in my life and I would probably be leading a very different life if I hadn't moved.
